HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR VOLUNTEERING MENTOR
MENTOR'S ROLE
•Serve as a person through an ongoing, one-to one
relationship
• Serve as a positive role model and
friend
• Build the relationship by planning
and participating in activities
together
• Strive for mutual respect
• Build self-esteem and motivation
• Help Protégés set goals and work
toward accomplishing them
TIME COMMITMENT
• Be able and willing to participate
for the duration of the program
(maximum of 9 months).
• Be able and willing to meet as
scheduled (approximately 2
hours monthly).
• Participate in an initial one-hour
School-Based Component
orientation session.
PARTICIPATION REQUIREMENTS
• Be interested in working with
young people
• Be willing to complete the
application and screening process
• Be dependable and consistent in
meeting the time commitments
• Attend mentor orientation as
prescribed
• Be willing to communicate with
program staff regarding mentoring
activities, if needed.
• Have access to an automobile
SCHOOL-BASED COMPONENT
SENIOR MENTOR REQUIREMENTS
• Be a current high school student
(12th)
• A photo of yourself
• Complete Application
• A 3.5 GPA
• Be in a good academic status

COMMUNITY PROFESSIONALS
MENTOR'S ROLE
• Guide and support a young person through an ongoing, “structured but free” one-to-one relationship
• Utilize a “life-coach” style of mentoring while helping students establish college and career goals and steps necessary to achieve them
• Build self-esteem by believing in protégé while inspiring and motivating them for success in life
• Build the relationship by planning and participating in activities together
• Strive for mutual respect while serving as a positive role model
TIME COMMITMENT
• Participate in an initial one hour mentor orientation
• Participate in occasional meetings with families and other participants
• Spend at least two-four hours a month with protégé
• Attend end of year special events for RGV Mentors
PARTICIPATION REQUIREMENTS
• Have a sincere desire to inspire and motivate young people
• Complete the required selection process
• Complete orientation, including documentation required for compliance with applicable laws
• Be dependable and consistent in meeting commitments as outlined in orientation and mentor guide
• Communicate with program staff and provide constructive feedback regarding mentoring activities
• Have access to an automobile
• No criminal history or other legal problems
• Do not use illicit drugs and do not use alcohol or controlled substances in an inappropriate manner
